Knightia is an extinct genus of fish found in North and South America. Approximately 58 million years ago, many fish and marine animals in these areas died, although the reasons why are unclear. Their remains were covered by a fine layer of calcium carbonate, preserving every delicate feature. Through a long fossilization process, the original bones, skin, and scales were replaced with the minerals in the sediment that buried them.
